Thailand proposes 450 baht tourist tax for foreign visitors

The Thai government is seeking public opinion on a proposed flat tourist tax of 450 baht (approximately 12 euros) for all foreign visitors entering the country. This new proposal deviates from previous plans that suggested different rates for air, land, and sea arrivals.

Revenue from the levy is intended for a special tourism development fund. These funds will be used to improve tourism facilities and enhance safety and insurance for foreign visitors. Under the current proposal, travelers who pay the fee can enter and exit Thailand multiple times within a 30-day period without paying again, provided their insurance coverage remains valid. This feature is designed to benefit travelers visiting neighboring countries like Laos, Cambodia, or Malaysia.

The implementation is expected to be phased. Travelers arriving by air would be the first to encounter the fee, potentially starting around early 2027. Collection at land and sea borders would follow approximately one year later to allow for the establishment of necessary control and payment systems. Various payment methods, including integration with flight tickets, online payments, or mobile applications, are being considered.
