Thailand ranks third globally for expatriate happiness in 2026 survey
Thailand has ranked third globally in the 2026 Expat Insider survey conducted by InterNations, trailing only Panama and Mexico. Among 31 destinations surveyed, Thailand achieved the highest happiness index score of 85.5, with 86% of expatriates expressing satisfaction with their life abroad, significantly higher than the 70% global average.
Key drivers for this high ranking include low cost of living, affordable housing, and high levels of social integration. Survey respondents specifically praised the friendliness of local residents and the quality of healthcare. Additionally, 42% of expatriates living in Thailand expressed intentions to settle there permanently.
Despite these strengths, the report highlights several significant challenges. Thailand ranked poorly in environmental and climate categories, with only one-third of respondents satisfied with air quality. Other low-ranking areas include political stability, freedom of speech, and administrative efficiency, particularly regarding the difficulty of opening local bank accounts and navigating online government services.
