Thailand reduces visa-free stay duration to 30 days

Thailand is implementing new visa exemption rules effective September 15, 2026. The maximum duration for visa-free stays for travelers from 60 countries, including Japan, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, will be reduced from 60 days to 30 days.

Under the new regulations, travelers entering through land borders may only utilize the visa exemption twice per calendar year. The Thai government stated that the previous 60-day extension, introduced during the pandemic to support tourism, is being rescinded due to security risks and concerns regarding illegal activities or unauthorized long-term stays.

Travelers planning stays longer than 30 days are advised to apply for visas through the official E-Visa portal. Authorities note that entry is determined by the stamp in the passport; those arriving before the September 15 deadline will still be subject to the previous 60-day rule.
