Thailand reports 45 deaths from Whitmore disease in four provinces

Thailand has recorded 570 cases and 45 deaths related to Whitmore disease, also known as melioidosis, across four provinces in the Northeast region between January 1 and October 22, 2026.

According to the Disease Prevention and Control Office 9 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram province reported the highest number of infections with 245 cases and 12 deaths. Surin recorded 139 cases and 11 deaths, while Nakhon Ratchasima reported 136 cases and 17 deaths. Chaiyaphum province saw 50 cases and 5 deaths. The highest infection rates were observed among individuals aged 45 and older, with the 65-plus demographic being the most affected.

Health officials warn that the risk of infection increases during prolonged rainfall and flooding, as the Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria reside naturally in soil and water. The bacteria can enter the body through skin wounds, inhalation of contaminated dust or water droplets, or ingestion of contaminated food and water. Farmers and those cleaning up after floods are at particular risk. Authorities recommend using protective gear, such as rubber boots and gloves, and avoiding direct contact with potentially contaminated soil and water.
