Thailand school shooting triggers calls for stricter gun control

A 14-year-old student at Debsirin Nonthaburi Secondary School in Thailand killed six people before taking his own life. The tragedy followed an earlier incident where the student used his grandfather's handgun to kill his grandparents at their home north of Bangkok. Among the school victims were five teachers and staff members, and a 12-year-old girl later succumbed to her injuries.

Investigations revealed the student had an interest in firearms and frequently watched violent content on social media. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul noted the student was under severe academic stress. The incident has reignited debates over Thailand's high rate of gun ownership, with an estimated 10 million firearms in circulation.

In response to a series of recent shootings, including a separate incident involving a former lawmaker, the Thai government is considering stricter regulations. Proposed measures include limiting the public carrying of firearms to government officials on duty. Schools have also begun implementing increased security measures, such as metal detectors.
