Thailand seeks AI neutrality amid US-China tech competition

Yotsanan Wongsawat, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, has stated that Thailand must maintain neutrality amid pressure from the United States to choose sides in the artificial intelligence (AI) technology competition against China.

Wongsawat noted that the AI landscape involves various sectors, including semiconductors. He indicated that Thailand will consult with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to determine the country's diplomatic stance. To avoid being subject to constant external pressure, Wongsawat emphasized the necessity of strengthening Thailand's domestic technological foundations and scientific knowledge.

The government has been working for several months to build these essential foundations through collaborations with countries such as France, Japan, and South Korea. By establishing a strong internal technological base, Thailand aims to gain leverage and ensure it can navigate international technological shifts effectively.
