Thailand seizes 2.2 million illegal cigarettes in southern border crackdown
The Thai government has intensified its crackdown on illegal cigarette smuggling in the southern border provinces. Following directives from Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, security and administrative agencies have launched proactive operations to intercept tax-evading goods.
Authorities successfully seized 117,820 packs, or approximately 2,289,000 cigarettes, of untaxed foreign brands across 14 southern provinces. The seizure involves an estimated excise tax loss of 7,095,966 baht and projected fines totaling approximately 106,439,490 baht.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploytalay Lakmisaengchan stated that the operations aim to protect state revenue, ensure trade fairness, and prevent smuggling networks from using southern border areas as transit or distribution hubs. Suspects and confiscated goods have been handed over to investigators for legal proceedings.
