Thailand solar panel imports surge as China dominates 99.3% of market
Thailand’s solar panel imports surged by 88.7% year-on-year to US$426.7 million during the first seven months of 2026. This significant increase follows a period of contraction in import values during 2024 and 2025.
China dominates the market, accounting for 99.3% of total imports with a value of US$423.9 million, representing a 107.1% increase compared to the same period last year. Other suppliers, including Singapore and Hong Kong, each contribute approximately 0.3% to the market.
The surge is driven by a government-backed initiative to implement a household solar installation programme. This plan aims to provide subsidies of approximately THB50,000 per household, initially targeting one million households. The move is intended to reduce electricity costs for consumers and mitigate energy-price pressures. To support the sector, the Thai government is working to bolster domestic manufacturing capabilities through worker training and potential reductions in duties on production inputs.
