Thailand targets potash mining expansion to boost fertilizer security
Thailand is moving to develop its domestic potash resources to enhance agricultural security and reduce reliance on imports. Industry Minister Varawut Silpa-archa stated that the country currently imports approximately 1 million tons of potash annually, valued at 14 billion baht. Developing local mines, particularly in the Korat and Sakon Nakhon basins in the Northeast, could reduce these import costs and provide more stable production factors for farmers.
If targets are met, Thailand's total potash production capacity could reach 3.2 million tons per year. After meeting domestic demand, an estimated 2.2 million tons could be exported, potentially generating over 30 billion baht in annual revenue and positioning Thailand as an ASEAN hub for potash and chemical fertilizer production.
To mitigate environmental risks, the government has mandated strict measures, including brine reinjection into underground mines and comprehensive land reclamation. For specific projects in Udon Thani, measures include water circulation systems and a minimum of 500 million baht in mining damage insurance. One major project by Thai Kali Co., Ltd. in Nakhon Ratchasima is already progressing, with ventilation tunnels reaching depths of 280 meters.
