Thailand targets transnational crime networks amid virtual kidnapping scams
Thai cyber police have issued an urgent warning about a growing “virtual kidnapping” scam that manipulates victims through psychological pressure, fake ransom demands and isolation. The warning followed the rescue of a 21‑year‑old Chinese student in Samut Prakan, after her family paid three million baht in ransom. Authorities advise the public to hang up on suspicious calls, avoid sharing personal data and report any threats directly to police.
Investigations also reveal that Chinese‑owned front companies are being used as proxies for transnational crime syndicates operating in Thailand. These networks exploit regulatory loopholes to run illicit activities such as narcotics trafficking, illegal gambling, sex trafficking and large‑scale money laundering. The schemes rely on Thai nominee directors to conceal true ownership while foreign criminal groups retain operational control, prompting a broader crackdown on the “gray Chinese” networks.
Both developments highlight Thailand’s intensified effort to combat sophisticated cross‑border criminal operations that threaten public safety and financial integrity.
