Thailand Tightens Airport Security and Launches Armed Crackdown on Drug Trafficking

Thailand announced a nationwide "Zero Trust" security overhaul for its international airports after a Thai Airways flight attendant was caught smuggling 1.8 kg of heroin at Melbourne Airport. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the breach exposed serious loopholes, prompting the removal of screening exemptions for pilots, cabin crew and ground staff, mandatory body checks, expanded K9 units, unannounced drug testing and upgraded biometric systems.

In parallel, Thai security forces engaged a drug caravan near the Myanmar border in Chiang Mai province, killing four armed guards and seizing 760,000 methamphetamine tablets, four kilograms of heroin and 25 kg of raw opium. A separate operation in Kamphaeng Phet intercepted a truck loaded with meth concealed under cucumbers, valued at about eight million baht. The coordinated actions aim to dismantle transnational narcotics networks operating through Thailand’s northern borders and major transit routes.
