Thailand to allow airport security to inspect checked bags without passengers

Starting October 16, 2026, security personnel at Thai airports will be permitted to open checked baggage for inspection without the passenger being present. This policy change, announced by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), applies specifically to luggage flagged during X-ray screening for suspicious items, dangerous goods, or prohibited objects.

The measure aims to prevent flight delays by allowing security to address anomalies immediately rather than searching for passengers who have already passed through check-in. To ensure accountability, inspections will follow strict control procedures and will be recorded for traceability. If an inspection occurs, security staff will leave a notification inside the luggage.

CAAT recommends that passengers use international standard locks, such as TSA locks, which can be opened with specialized tools to avoid damage. Travelers are also advised against placing valuables, important documents, or fragile items in checked baggage.
