Thailand to allow airport security to open suspicious checked bags

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has announced new security protocols allowing airport staff to open checked baggage without the passenger present. Effective October 16, 2026, these measures apply to baggage checked at Thai airports, including Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Hat Yai.

Security personnel may open bags if screening identifies suspicious items, explosives, dangerous goods, or potential threats to aircraft, passengers, or airport security. To ensure transparency, the entire inspection process must be recorded on video, and a ‘Notice of Baggage Inspection’ must be left inside the luggage to notify the owner.

Inspections must occur in designated areas, and authorities will retain evidence for later review. Prohibited or dangerous items discovered during searches may be confiscated and will not be returned. CAAT recommends that travelers use internationally recognized locks, such as TSA locks, and avoid packing valuables or important documents in checked luggage.
