Thailand to end visa exemption for Sri Lankan citizens on September 15

Thailand is implementing a significant change to its visa policy affecting Sri Lankan passport holders, effective September 15. Under the revised measures, Sri Lankans will no longer be eligible for the existing visa-exemption scheme.

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the changes, which were published in the Royal Gazette, follow a Cabinet review considering national security, economic interests, and reciprocity. Travelers from Sri Lanka will now be required to obtain an appropriate visa prior to their trip. Applications must be processed through Thailand’s online e-Visa system, as the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo does not accept in-person applications.

Individuals entering Thailand before the September 15 deadline under current exemption rules will be permitted to remain until their existing period expires. Travelers are advised to verify requirements in advance to avoid boarding denials or entry refusals.
