Thailand to let airport security open checked bags without passengers

Thailand's Civil Aviation Authority has issued a regulation that will take effect on 16 October 2026, authorising security personnel at all Thai airports to open checked baggage without the owner present when a justified suspicion arises from X‑ray screening.

The rule covers both domestic and international flights from airports such as Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Phuket and Chiang Mai. Inspections will be video‑recorded, a notice of inspection will be placed inside the suitcase, and any prohibited items may be seized. The change follows earlier measures that banned lithium batteries in checked luggage and tightened other aviation safety controls.
