Thailand to reduce visa-free stays for over 60 countries

Thailand is implementing significant changes to its visa-exemption policy effective September 15, 2026. For more than 60 countries, including members of the European Union, the United States, Canada, and several others, the maximum visa-free stay will be reduced from 60 days to 30 days.

Authorities stated the policy overhaul aims to enhance national security and combat crime. The decision follows high-profile incidents involving foreign nationals engaged in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and the operation of illegal businesses such as hotels and schools without proper permits.

While many travelers face shorter stays, some nationalities will see benefits; citizens of Peru, Brazil, and South Korea will have their visa-free stay extended from 60 to 90 days. Additionally, travelers can apply for a one-time stay extension through immigration officers or utilize the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), which allows for stays of up to 180 days with proof of financial stability.

Moroccan citizens will no longer be eligible for visa-free entry and must secure visas in advance. Other specific changes include a 15-day exemption for Mauritius and Seychelles, and Visa on Arrival options for citizens of Azerbaijan, Belarus, and Serbia.
