Thailand trade grows through electronics and tech demand
Thailand is experiencing a shift in its trade profile driven by rising demand for technology and digital infrastructure. During the first eight months of 2026, exports rose 18.9% year-over-year to USD 266.15 billion, while imports grew 36.1% to USD 303.987 billion. This rapid import growth resulted in a merchandise trade deficit of USD 37.837 billion.
Electronics remain a dominant sector in the export mix. Automatic data processing machines and parts were the largest category, generating USD 37.51 billion (14.09% of total exports), followed by telephone sets at USD 11.729 billion and electronic integrated circuits at USD 8.732 billion.
For businesses looking to expand into the country, the regulatory environment remains complex. Foreign entities must navigate the Foreign Business Act, shareholder scrutiny from the Department of Business Development, and various sector-specific licensing requirements. Service providers such as MSA Asia, Deloitte, EY, and others offer various strategies for incorporation, compliance, and workforce expansion to manage these entry barriers.
