Thailand to reduce visa-free stays and tighten border rules

Thailand is implementing significant changes to its immigration and visa exemption policies effective September 15, 2026. The government will reduce the visa-free stay duration from 60 days to 30 days for citizens of approximately 60 countries, including India, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

In addition to the reduced stay duration, new restrictions will target land and sea border crossings. Visa-exempt travelers will be limited to just two land border entries per calendar year. This measure is intended to curb illegal activities and long-term stays facilitated by frequent border runs. Citizens of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei remain exempt from this specific land border cap.

Travelers entering under the new 30-day exemption must adhere to several requirements: a passport valid for at least six months, confirmed return or onward tickets, and proof of hotel bookings. Visitors are also required to complete a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) within 72 hours of arrival and must carry at least 20,000 Thai Baht in cash per person as proof of funds. The policy is strictly for tourism; individuals with job offers are advised to apply for appropriate work visas.
