Thailand upholds life sentence for Daniel Sancho in Arrieta murder case

The Samui Provincial Court in Thailand has upheld the life imprisonment sentence for Spanish national Daniel Sancho for the premeditated murder of Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta. The court dismissed appeals from both the defense and the victim's family, confirming Sancho's responsibility for the murder, the dismemberment of the body, and the destruction of the victim's passport.

Sancho's defense had requested a retrial, arguing the death resulted from a fight rather than premeditated murder. Meanwhile, Arrieta's family had sought the death penalty and increased compensation. The court maintained the original compensation of 4.42 million baht (approximately 117,000 euros), deeming it adequate.

The ruling has caused significant distress for the victim's family in Colombia and the Sancho family in Spain. While the defense indicated they might continue legal challenges, reports suggest the possibility of appealing to the Supreme Court in Bangkok with new legal counsel.
