Thailand warns against price gouging and hoarding during floods

The Thai government has issued a warning against the stockpiling of consumer goods and price gouging amid widespread flooding in several areas, including Bangkok. Officials have urged the public not to panic, stating that the Department of Internal Trade has verified that essential supplies remain sufficient and no factors currently necessitate price increases.

To ensure fair trade, the government is coordinating with manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers to monitor stock levels, increase replenishment cycles, and accelerate the distribution of goods to high-demand areas where flooding has slowed transportation.

Under the Prices of Goods and Services Act B.E. 2542, businesses found guilty of unfair practices, such as unauthorized price hikes or hoarding, face severe legal consequences. Penalties include a maximum prison sentence of seven years, a fine of up to 140,000 baht, or both. Consumers are encouraged to report unfair pricing or shortages via the Department of Internal Trade hotline at 1569.
