Thailand's Election Commission faces scrutiny over 860,000 baht transfer

Parit Wacharasindhu, a lawmaker from the People's Party, is demanding transparency from the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) regarding a 860,000 baht transfer to a former ECT investigative official.

The funds were transferred between April and July 2024 by Yanee Sifa, a local politician in Amnat Charoen, to Surachai, an official who was responsible for investigating election fraud allegations against Bhumjaithai Party MP Suksomruay Wantaneeyakul. During this period, the ECT voted to dismiss the fraud complaint against the MP.

While the ECT has moved to dismiss Surachai for misconduct, Parit has questioned why the commission has not investigated the source of the funds or the political connections involved. He noted that Yanee has close ties to Suksomruay and has raised concerns about whether these payments were intended to influence election processes or facilitate Senate election activities. Parit has threatened to involve parliamentary committees to demand full disclosure of documents if the ECT does not provide a clear explanation.
