Thailand's King Rama X marks 74th birthday amid controversial family photos

On 28 July 2026, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, known as Rama X, entered his 75th year of life, celebrating his 74th birthday with traditional ceremonies across Thailand. The monarch, who ascended the throne in 2016, was observed by crowds and flag‑bearing citizens while temples held rites in his honor.

In the days surrounding the celebration, his daughter Princess Sirivannavari posted a series of Instagram photographs featuring the king and herself. Observers noted unusual proportions and staging in the images, describing them as unsettling and suggesting possible Photoshop manipulation. The posts attracted thousands of likes but limited commentary, sparking public curiosity about the royal family's visual presentation. The birthday also came shortly after the death of the king’s eldest daughter, Princess Bajrakitiyabha, who passed away on 11 June 2026 at age 47.

The king’s fourth wife, Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana, also appeared alongside him during the celebrations, highlighting the personal dimension of the event as Thailand’s monarchy marked another year of reign.
