Thailand's National Security Council tackles southern border crisis and BRN talks

On 31 July the Thai National Security Council convened at the Government House, chaired by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and attended by the defence, interior, foreign and other ministers. The meeting reviewed the security situation in the three southern provinces after a scheduled peace dialogue with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) was postponed, assessing the risk of renewed violence and the impact on civilians.

The council approved six measures: intensified security surveillance; stricter control of border crossings to prevent militants from fleeing to Malaysia; rigorous law‑enforcement against violent actors, including the issuance of INTERPOL red notices; a review of the dialogue content before any resumption; expanded reintegration programmes for former militants; and enhanced diplomatic and security cooperation with Malaysia. Officials stressed that talks with the BRN are not cancelled and warned against misinformation that could inflame tensions.
