Thailand's New Pet Import Rules Require Early Preparation

Thailand introduced a new pet ownership ordinance in January 2026 that tightens import requirements for dogs and cats. Expatriates must microchip animals before administering the rabies vaccine; a vaccine given first will be rejected and require revaccination. The primary rabies shot must be given when the animal is at least 12 weeks old and at least 21 days before travel. Dogs also need vaccinations for leptospirosis, distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus, while cats require rabies and FVRCP.

Within seven days of departure a licensed veterinarian must treat the pet for internal and external parasites, recording product details on the health documents. An import permit from the Animal Quarantine Station must be applied for 7‑60 days in advance, with a 30‑day window recommended. The final step is an International Health Certificate signed by a veterinarian and endorsed by the home‑country authority. On arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport owners present the documents and pay a 500‑baht entry fee. Complete paperwork usually results in clearance, though officers may impose a 30‑day quarantine if documentation is incomplete or health concerns arise.
