Thales Alenia Space explores feasibility of orbital data centers
The rapid growth of AI is driving the digital infrastructure sector to explore the feasibility of placing computing components in orbit. While still highly speculative, the concept of space-based data centers is moving from science fiction toward structured engineering exploration.
Thales Alenia Space is leading the ASCEND feasibility study under the European Commission’s Horizon Europe program. This study examines whether orbital data centers could support cloud computing while contributing to long-term environmental goals and digital sovereignty.
The shift toward orbital computing highlights critical engineering challenges that apply to both Earth-based and space-based infrastructure, including power access, heat dissipation, system autonomy, operational resilience, and the control of critical digital assets.
