Thales to establish defense maintenance base in Japan

French defense contractor Thales plans to establish a maintenance and operational support base in Japan. This move is reported to be the first of its kind by a foreign defense firm in the country, dedicated to the maintenance and operation of Japanese military equipment.

Thales CEO Patrice Caine stated the facility “will mark a milestone toward Thales’s long-term engagement in Japan.” The base will initially focus on equipment for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, with potential future expansion to the Ground and Air Self-Defense Forces, as well as civilian applications. Key areas of cooperation may include radar and sonar technologies.

In addition to the new base, Thales is increasing local production by transferring 2R2M heavy mortar system technology to Japan Steel Works, with manufacturing expected to begin in Japan in 2027. This development occurs as Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi increases defense spending amid regional security concerns regarding China and North Korea.
