Thames Water apologizes for £145,000 customer billing error
Thames Water has issued an unreserved apology to a North London teacher, Adam Bainbridge, after a meter reading error resulted in £145,562 being debited from his bank account. The error occurred early on a Thursday morning, causing the account to fall significantly into overdraft and blocking other scheduled payments.
Mr. Bainbridge’s wife, Julia, reported that the family initially struggled to reach human customer service, interacting only with a chatbot that suggested the error would be fixed in the next billing cycle. The funds were eventually returned after the family contacted their bank, Halifax.
Thames Water stated it is introducing additional process checks to prevent a recurrence and has offered a gesture of goodwill. The incident occurs amid rising consumer complaints regarding water companies and ongoing financial scrutiny of Thames Water, which currently owes approximately £20bn to lenders.
