Thanasis Davakis attends El Alamein Battle anniversary in Egypt

Greek Deputy Minister of National Defense Thanasis Davakis traveled to Egypt to attend the 84th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein. During the commemorations, Davakis visited the Greek Military Memorial, participated in a memorial service, and laid a wreath at the monument dedicated to the fallen Greek soldiers.

In his commemorative speech, Davakis highlighted the historical significance of the site, noting that the flame of Greek freedom was carried to the Middle East during a period when Greece was under triple occupation. He specifically honored the formation of the Greek Middle East Army, which included volunteers from the Egyptian diaspora and soldiers who crossed the sea to join the fight. He also recognized the contribution of the 1st Greek Brigade, which served alongside the 8th British Army and suffered significant casualties during the battle.

The ceremony was attended by several diplomats, including the Greek Ambassador to Egypt Nikolaos Papageorgiou, the Cypriot Ambassador Elena Rafti, and the German Ambassador Jürgen Schulz, as well as the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, Rear Admiral Konstantinos Bouzos.
