Thanjavur discovery: Pallava-era Shiva lingam and Pandya coin unearthed
Archaeologists and historians have identified a Pallava-era Shiva lingam and a Pandya-era copper coin discovered near Boothalur in the Thanjavur district. The artifacts were unearthed during construction work on private land in Elangadu village.
The Shiva lingam, which includes an avudaiyar, is believed to date back to the Pallava period. Researchers noted that the site's history suggests further excavations could reveal additional ancient idols and artifacts.
The copper coin, weighing approximately 3.30 grams, has been identified as belonging to the reign of Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan I (ruling AD 1250–1284). The coin features a human figure on one side and a fish positioned between two traditional oil lamps on the reverse. It bears the Tamil inscription ‘Ellam Thalaiyanan’, a title associated with the ruler.
