Thanjavur farmers protest as water shortage destroys samba paddy crops
Farmers in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu have begun ploughing withered samba paddy crops back into the soil due to an acute irrigation shortage. In areas such as Melattur and Ranganathapuram, approximately 1,000 acres of cultivation are affected by the lack of water.
Protesters attribute the crisis to inadequate storage at the Mettur reservoir, noting that water was released from the dam only after an 81-day interval. Additionally, farmers reported that groundwater is unsuitable for irrigation because it is saline.
The affected cultivators are demanding that government departments assess the extent of the crop loss and provide financial compensation. Farmers have threatened to lay siege to the District Collector’s office if their demands are not met.
