Thanksgiving cactus care: optimal placement for autumn blooms

To ensure successful flowering in the autumn, the Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) requires specific environmental conditions that mimic its native Brazilian rainforest habitat. Unlike desert cacti, this species thrives in bright, indirect light and high humidity rather than direct sunlight, which can scorch its segments.

Key placement strategies include positioning the plant near east-facing windows for gentle morning light, or near north-facing windows in naturally bright rooms. Other effective locations include bright bathrooms, kitchens away from heat sources, or on shelves near large windows.

Successful blooming also depends on light cycles. As a short-day plant, it requires 12 to 14 hours of total darkness for at least 25 nights to trigger bud formation. Maintaining stable temperatures between 16 and 21 degrees Celsius during the day and 13 to 18 degrees Celsius at night is also recommended to prevent flower buds from dropping prematurely.
