Greek migration officials conduct regional tours and address misinformation
Greek migration officials are conducting a series of regional visits to address policy implementation and local concerns. Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris visited facilities in Imathia and Pella, emphasizing a new policy that focuses on separating asylum seekers from those ineligible for protection. He noted that individuals without refugee profiles will be held in closed facilities, stating, “the logic of subsidies is over.” During his visit to Imathia, he highlighted government investment in local infrastructure, including over 8 million euros for compensatory projects.
In Evros, Deputy Minister Sevi Voloudaki inspected border facilities and the Evros fence, emphasizing the importance of strict border control and the role of the region in national security. She noted that current low migration flows are a result of specific government policies.
Minister Plevris also addressed the spread of misinformation on social media. He denounced several instances of “fake news,” including the use of three-year-old footage from unrelated facilities being presented as current events in Sintiki, and scenes from Theouata being falsely identified as occurring in Crete. He attributed this misinformation to political toxicity ahead of the 2027 elections.
Additionally, local officials in Skydra and Heraklion raised concerns regarding migration infrastructure and the impact on local economies and agriculture.
