The Amazing Race returns for Season 39 with unknown contestants

The reality competition series ‘The Amazing Race’ returns for its 39th season on CBS, debuting September 30. This installment features a cast of unknown contestants rather than reality television stars.

Host Phil Keoghan stated that the decision to cast unknown individuals is driven by fan research indicating a preference for relatable participants. Keoghan noted that while fans have a fascination with celebrities, the most successful seasons often feature everyday people, such as coal miners, who provide a sense of rawness and authenticity. He suggested that a celebrity-focused season might only occur as a special one-off event.

Among the new competitors are Dylan Matter, a 2025 Coronado High School graduate, and his grandfather, Doug Matter. The pair represents a significant age gap, with 73-year-old Doug and 18-year-old Dylan being among the oldest and youngest contestants in the show’s history.
