The Bahamas marine research reveals overfished lobster stocks and rare spawning

New scientific research regarding Bahamian marine life has revealed both conservation challenges and biological milestones. A peer-reviewed stock assessment published in Frontiers in Marine Science indicates that the Caribbean spiny lobster, the country’s largest fishery, is currently overfished. Using the CMSY++ model, researchers determined the stock stands at 0.61 of the biomass required to support a maximum sustainable yield.

In a separate biological discovery, scientists from the Perry Institute for Marine Science have documented the spawning of the white margate for the first time. The observation, published in the Bulletin of Marine Science, occurred in the southern Bahamas during a dive in January 2025. The event was recorded at an active Nassau grouper spawning aggregation, providing rare data on a species that is vital to both commercial and subsistence fishing in the Caribbean.
