The Band: A retrospective on the musical legacy of Americana pioneers

The Band, a group of rock 'n' roll veterans, established a significant legacy as pioneers of Americana music. Originally performing as the Hawks for Ronnie Hawkins, the group gained prominence after backing Bob Dylan during his 1966 tour.

The original lineup consisted of Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, and Robbie Robertson. Their discography includes the 1968 debut ‘Music From Big Pink’ and the influential 1969 album ‘The Band’. The group also released collaborative works with Dylan, such as ‘The Basement Tapes’ and ‘Planet Waves’.

Following their 1976 farewell performance at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom, documented in ‘The Last Waltz’, the group saw various iterations. While Robbie Robertson focused on solo projects and soundtracks, the remaining members reunited for live performances and recorded three albums during the 1990s.
