Beatles songs frequently cited in scientific research papers
A study published in the journal ‘PLOS One’ by a research team from the University of Technology in Delft reveals that scientists frequently use pop culture references, particularly from The Beatles, in their academic papers.
Using AI models to analyze the Scopus database, researchers led by Gabriel Budel identified 2,237 exact references to Beatles songs and 963 creative wordplays involving the band’s lyrics or titles. The study found that these references span various disciplines, including medicine, social sciences, economics, and environmental science, with publications dating from the 1970s through 2025.
Researchers suggest that carefully selected cultural references may help improve information retention and allow scientists to reach a broader audience beyond the immediate academic community. Examples include a Long Covid study titled ‘The lung and winding road’ and a patent law paper referencing ‘Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Patent’.
