The Black Eel pub seeks extended hours amid local opposition
The Black Eel, a Grade II-listed pub located on Kingsland High Street in Dalston, is facing opposition regarding a bid to extend its operating hours. The venue, which occupies the former F Cooke premises, seeks to remain open until 1:30 am on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays to remain competitive amid rising business rates.
During a Hackney Council licensing panel hearing on August 11, an anonymous local resident objected to the proposal, citing concerns over noise nuisance and crowds on the pavement. The resident argued that the extension could create a domino effect for other nearby establishments and criticized the lack of a customer control plan. While the pub has previously agreed to conditions such as capping the number of standing customers, the resident expressed concerns regarding the impact on pedestrians and local residents during warm weather.
