The Clash confront hostile crowd during early 1976 London gig

On September 5, 1976, the punk rock band The Clash performed one of their earliest shows at the Roundhouse in London. At the time, the group was so new that they were not even listed in the newspaper advertisements for the event.

Managed by Bernie Rhodes, the original lineup featured Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Keith Levene, Paul Simonon, and Terry Chimes. Although it was only their fifth concert, the band performed several songs that would become staples, including “Janie Jones” and “London’s Burning.”

The performance was marked by tension between the band and the audience. Many attendees had gathered to see the headliners, the Kursaal Flyers, and met the newcomers with indifference or hostility. Audio recordings from the night capture singer Joe Strummer confronting the crowd for their lack of energy, famously telling them they were not just sitting in front of a “fuckin’ TV set.”
