Gears of War: E-Day launches in early access with Unreal Engine 5 graphics

The Coalition has released Gears of War: E-Day in early access for specific editions, ahead of its full worldwide launch on October 6. The developer confirmed that several legacy features, including meat shields, chainsaw duels, private lobbies, and leaderboards, are absent from the initial release. This decision stems from the game being built from scratch on a new gameplay sandbox to ensure a unified experience across Campaign, PvE, and PvP modes.

Technical analysis from Digital Foundry indicates the title utilizes Unreal Engine 5 to push high-end graphical capabilities on Xbox Series X|S. The game implements Hardware Lumen for real-time global illumination and Epic’s Megalights technology to simulate complex light sources with physical consistency.

While some missing features may arrive via post-launch updates, the developers noted that others might be reserved for future projects. The game’s first season is scheduled to run for eight weeks until December 1, with ranked modes expected to arrive on October 13.
