The Coalition defends Gears of War: E-Day Xbox exclusivity
Mike Crump, head of developer The Coalition, has defended the decision to keep the newly released Gears of War: E-Day exclusive to Xbox Series X/S and PC. Despite receiving critical acclaim, the title has faced backlash from players disappointed by its lack of a PlayStation 5 release, particularly following the multi-platform launch of Gears of War: Reloaded last year.
In an interview with the BBC, Crump stated that the franchise has been deeply tied to the Xbox identity for twenty years. He explained that the studio’s metrics for success extend beyond sales figures, focusing instead on pushing Microsoft’s hardware to its technical limits and showcasing the platform's visual capabilities. The game utilizes advanced memory optimizations to maximize performance on Xbox consoles.
This exclusivity comes during a period of significant restructuring at Microsoft, which has seen the layoff of 1,600 employees and the closure of several first-party studios. While there is industry uncertainty regarding job stability at The Coalition, Crump expressed confidence in the team and their ability to deliver a high-quality experience.
