The College of Wooster researchers study degradation of glow-in-the-dark pigments

Researchers at The College of Wooster are investigating the chemical degradation of glow-in-the-dark pigments to help artists and conservators preserve luminous works of art. Unlike standard pigments that reflect light, these fluorescent and phosphorescent materials absorb energy and emit it at specific wavelengths. While these colors provide significant visual impact for pop art, fashion, and commercial signage, they tend to degrade over time, resulting in duller or darker hues.

The study aims to understand why these materials lose their luminosity to develop more durable phosphorescent dyes. These findings could have applications ranging from art conservation to the creation of long-lasting materials for fashion and safety signage, such as airport runways. The research findings are being presented at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Fall 2026 meeting.
