The Color Purple Musical returns to Rio de Janeiro
The musical production of ‘The Color Purple’ is currently performing in Rio de Janeiro at the Teatro Multiplan in Barra da Tijuca, with the season running until October 25.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, the production follows the life of Celie, a Black woman navigating racism, violence, and oppression in the American South during the first half of the 20th century. The story depicts her journey toward autonomy and self-discovery through her relationships with other women, such as Sofia and Shug Avery.
Directed by Tadeu Aguiar with a Brazilian adaptation by Artur Xexéo, the production features Suzana Santana in the lead role. This fifth season in Rio de Janeiro highlights a narrative of resistance and transformation through music and dance.
