The Daily iPad newspaper cuts 50 jobs as layoffs signal its decline
The Daily, launched on 2 February 2011 as the world’s first iPad‑only newspaper, was funded by News Corp and Rupert Murdoch with a $30 million investment and a subscription price of $0.99 per week. Despite attracting more than 100,000 paid subscribers, the venture lost roughly $30 million in its first year.
On 31 July 2012 the publication laid off 50 of its 170 employees – about one‑third of its staff – primarily editorial and sports journalists, with additional cuts to production and design staff. News Corp placed the app “on watch” after readership fell short of expectations, marking a clear sign that the experiment is ending.
