The Dawn Patrol Project hosts surf camp for sarcoma survivors
Eight sarcoma survivors participated in a three-day pilot program called ‘Surfing Through Sarcoma’ at The Wave in Bristol. The initiative was organized by Stephen Downes through his community interest company, The Dawn Patrol Project.
Downes, a two-time English kneeboard champion, founded the project following his 2022 diagnosis of myxofibrosarcoma. After undergoing major surgery that resulted in the removal of his left arm, shoulder, collarbone, and parts of his chest wall, Downes used surfing to aid his recovery and identity reconstruction.
The camp combined beginner surf lessons with wellbeing activities such as meditation and sound baths. The program aims to help those affected by cancer rediscover confidence, connection, and joy through water-based activities.
