The Devil Wears Prada 2 launches with $100 M budget and $433 M global box‑office

Twenty years after the original hit, the sequel "The Devil Wears Prada 2" hit cinemas with a production budget of about $100 million, roughly three times the $35 million spent on the 2006 film. The cost surge is driven mainly by top‑tier salaries – Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt each reportedly received more than $12 million in advance – and by premium filming locations such as Milan, as well as the purchase or custom‑making of high‑end designer clothing that was previously loaned for free.

The movie retains the core cast and revisits the world of the fashion magazine Runway, offering fan‑service references while updating the story for a new generation. Critical response has been mixed; Rotten Tomatoes shows a 78 % score and some reviewers note a lack of fresh surprises despite strong performances. Nevertheless, the film has performed strongly at the box office, earning about $433 million worldwide, including a modest €2 million from Dutch theatres.

Overall, the sequel demonstrates how legacy franchises can command massive financial resources and still attract large audiences, even as critics question its narrative originality.
