Susan Sarandon claims professional backlash over Palestine stance
At the Venice Film Festival, actress Susan Sarandon stated that she continues to face professional repercussions and the loss of film roles due to her public support for Palestine. Speaking during a press conference for her new film, ‘The Echo Chamber’, Sarandon claimed that certain agencies and industry power structures continue to discourage studios from hiring her.
Sarandon noted that while she perceives a shift in general public opinion regarding the historical significance of Palestine and U.S. foreign policy, significant resistance remains within Hollywood. She specifically mentioned that some industry figures and agencies continue to influence casting decisions against her. This follows her 2023 departure from the United Talent Agency (UTA) after making controversial remarks during a pro-Palestinian protest in New York.
Despite these challenges, Sarandon expressed gratitude to director Andrea Pallaoro for casting her in ‘The Echo Chamber’, an Italian production based on the final screenplay by the late Bernardo Bertolucci. She also remarked that she feels welcomed by international audiences and has found a supportive community outside of the traditional major studio framework.
