The Flintstones celebrates 66 years since primetime premiere
The animated series ‘The Flintstones’ marks its 66th anniversary since its groundbreaking premiere on ABC on September 30, 1960. Created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera of Hanna-Barbera, the show was the first animated program in the United States designed for a primetime television audience.
Set in the prehistoric town of Bedrock, the series blended Stone Age aesthetics with the suburban life of the 1950s and 60s. The show followed the lives of Fred and Wilma Flintstone, alongside their neighbors Barney and Betty Rubble. Drawing inspiration from live-action sitcoms like ‘The Honeymooners’, the series aimed to appeal to both children and adults.
Over its six-season run, which included 166 episodes, the show introduced iconic characters such as the Flintstones’ pet dinosaur, Dino, and the children Pebbles Flintstone and Bamm-Bamm Rubble. Its success proved that animation could compete with live-action programming in primetime slots and paved the way for future animated series.
