The Fly celebrates 40 years of sci-fi horror legacy

As the sci-fi horror film ‘The Fly’ celebrates its 40th anniversary, retrospective looks highlight the production history and technical achievements of David Cronenberg’s classic. The film, based on a short story by George Langelaan, was adapted by screenwriter Charles Edward Pogue and produced by Stuart Cornfeld after receiving support from 20th Century Fox.

Special effects artist Chris Walas, who won an Oscar for the film’s transformation sequences, described the project as a ‘Shakespearean tragedy in science fiction clothes.’ Walas noted that despite a significant time constraint—having only three months to complete work that typically required six due to Canadian Film Board incentives—the emotional impact of the metamorphosis remained a central element of the production.
