The Gambia adopts digital identity technology from Ghana’s Margins ID Group

The Gambia has partnered with Ghana-based Margins ID Group to implement its National Identity Management System. The agreement, signed in January 2026, covers the design, financing, construction, and eventual transfer of a national integrated digital identity system.

Ousman Bah, Special Adviser to the Gambian President on ICT and Digital Economy, stated that Ghana’s ability to consolidate information and ensure identity interoperability was a deciding factor. Bah noted that the Ghanaian model, which integrates various databases such as driver’s licensing, provided the infrastructure template desired for The Gambia.

The project is being delivered through a collaboration between the Gambian government and IMS Gambia Limited, an implementation partner within the Margins ID Group ecosystem. Margins ID Group secured the contract following a competitive process involving 11 international bidders, highlighting the capacity of African firms to provide critical sovereign digital infrastructure.
