The Gambia assumes leadership of 44-nation Least Developed Countries Group

The Gambia has assumed a three-year chairmanship of the Global Coordination Bureau of the Group of Least Developed Countries (LDCs), succeeding Nepal. The 44-member bloc represents nations across Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Caribbean.

Following an election by consensus at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Vice President Mohammed B. S. Jallow formally received the chairmanship during a ministerial meeting on September 25. Jallow pledged to lead with “dedication, fairness, and diligence,” focusing on the implementation of the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for 2022–2031.

The LDC Group serves as the primary platform for coordinating positions in UN negotiations regarding sustainable development, debt sustainability, trade, climate action, and technology transfer. In New York, the chairmanship will be led by Lamin B. Dibba, The Gambia’s Permanent Representative to the UN. Additionally, The Gambia has assumed chairmanship duties in Geneva to coordinate work at UNCTAD and WIPO.
